Frank Madden had founded the firm of solicitors Madden & Butler, Melbourne, befroe Madden entered State parliament in 1894. He had built the house in 1884, having designed and drawn the plans for the architect himself. it was the first large house to be built of red bricks and was ahead of its time in terms of comfort and convenience.
